Google Display Network (GDN)

Rockerbox uses Adwords URL parameters to add URL parameters for GDN.

Additionally, pixels can be added to track GDN impressions. This process is described below. To use this process, you will need to use the base pixel below.

📘

Discovery Campaigns

Note that impression tracking is not permitted by Adwords for Discovery campaigns.

Manually Generate Pixels

You can choose to either manually generate pixels or to follow the steps in the Create a Pixel Generation File section below.

If you choose to manually generate your pixels, you can append the below to the end of your base pixel, replacing the entire bracketed portions with the appropriate values from your GDN ad groups and campaigns.

&tier_two=[Campaign_ID]&tier_three=[Ad_Group_ID]&auction_id=%%CACHEBUSTER%%

📘

In order to implement the pixels, you'll need to submit a request to Google. Google requires that all requests are submitted with their own Excel file and the process described here.

You'll need to transfer data to Google's Excel template. To do this, you can follow the steps below.

  1. Download Google's Excel template for a 1x1 pixel here
  2. Go to the second tab
  3. Input your ad group IDs in column C. Keep these values unique. Google will reject requests with duplicate values.
  4. Input your impression tracking pixel for each ad group in column J
  5. In cell A3, select Ad Group ID
  6. In cell B3, select equals
  7. Drag cells A3 and B3 down

Create a Pixel Generation File

If you have manually generated pixels, you do not need to complete these steps to create a pixel generation file.

  1. Create headers in Row 1 of your Excel or Google Drive file as below

Campaign ID

Ad Group ID

Your Base Pixel

Impression Tracking Pixel

  1. Paste your base pixel code (provided by your Rockerbox contact) into the Your Base Pixel column in Row 2
  2. Paste the formula below into the Impression Tracking Pixel column in Row 2
=if(A2<>"",CONCATENATE(C2,"&tier_two=",A2,"&tier_three=",B2,"&auction_id=%%CACHEBUSTER%%"),"")
  1. Paste all of your Ad Group IDs and their parent Campaign IDs in the first two columns. Keep these values unique. Google will reject any pixel implementation requests that contain duplicates.
  2. Drag down the Your Base Pixel and Impression Tracking Pixel columns. You should see the impression tracking pixels being generated for each row.

Submit a Request to Google

In order to implement the pixels, you'll need to submit a request to Google.

Google requires that all requests are submitted with their own Excel file format and the process described here. This is a separate Excel file than the one you generated in earlier steps.

❗️

Do not submit the file from previous steps to Google. Instead, following the steps below to generate a new file using the pixels you generated.

  1. Download Google's Excel template for a 1x1 pixel here
  2. Go to the second tab
  3. Paste the ad group IDs from your pixel generation file into column C
  4. Paste the impression tracking pixels (text only, not the formulas) into Google's column J. These should line up with the ad group IDs you pasted in the last step.
  5. In cell A1, select Ad Group ID
  6. In cell B1, select equals
  7. Drag cells A1 and B1 down
